Fires are raging at 29 locations across Serbia; All available forces are on the ground

There are currently 29 active wildfires in open areas across Serbia, while a total of 3,926 such fires have been recorded in August alone.

Among the active fires are those on Mount Stolovi, in the village of Lukovo near Vranje, and on Zlatibor. Domestic firefighting and rescue units, volunteer firefighters, as well as international forces, are involved in the firefighting efforts.

Nedeljko Gagić, head of the Fire and Rescue Unit of Serbia’s Ministry of Interior (MUP), said that the fire on Mount Stolovi, in the Čiker area, has not yet been brought under control, but that its spread has been slowed despite strong winds.

According to Gagić, around 55 people are involved in the firefighting operation, including members of the fire and rescue units from Kraljevo, Novi Pazar, Prijepolje, Užice and Čačak, as well as volunteer firefighters from Kraljevo and Bogutovac.

Gagić said that no buildings are currently at risk and that firefighting efforts will continue throughout the night and into the following day.

A Russian Il-76 aircraft, known as the “Ilyushin,” has been deployed to help fight the wildfire in the village of Lukovo near Vranje.

The fire in Lukovo has been active since the afternoon of the day before yesterday, and according to the city emergency response headquarters, one house was affected by the fire.

The Russian Il-76 aircraft, operated by the Ministry of Emergency Situations, has made 19 flights and dropped 798 tonnes of water over fire-affected areas during its four days of operations in Serbia, Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said.

Serbian experts have praised the effectiveness of the Russian aerial firefighting operation.

A new fire broke out yesterday after 3 p.m. in the Vodice area of Zlatibor, where flames engulfed around two hectares of low vegetation and pine forest, according to Čajetina Mayor Milan Stamatović.

European firefighting teams are also taking part in efforts to extinguish the fire in the Deliblato Sands.

Andreas von Beckerath, Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, said that the EU provided assistance and deployed European firefighting teams to Serbia within 24 hours of receiving Serbia’s request for help.

During a visit to the EU firefighters deployed in the Deliblato Sands, von Beckerath said he hoped the EU would be able to help Serbia not only contain and extinguish the fires, but also with the recovery and reforestation of the affected areas.
