Finally, some good news: Drones detect no hotspots in Deliblato Sands; Čaušić: "The weekend will be crucial"

Head of Serbian Interior Ministry’s Emergency Situations Sector Luka Čaušić said that 12 fires are currently active in Serbia. He added that, for the first time since the fire broke out in Deliblato Sands, satellite imagery is showing no active hotspots there.

Čaušić said that the situation in Deliblatska Peščara, where conditions had been the most critical, is now better than in previous days.

“This is the first time, our colleagues from ‘Vojvodinašume’ report, that satellite imagery is not detecting any hotspots in Deliblatska Peščara. We are carrying out intensive mop-up operations, both during the day yesterday and overnight, and we will continue monitoring the area with unmanned aerial vehicles,” Čaušić told RTS.

He stressed that caution is still necessary, as strong winds of 50–60 km/h are forecast for the weekend.

“There will be gusts of up to 90 km/h, which makes firefighting operations more difficult and presents a specific and unique challenge in the careers of many experienced firefighter-rescuers, not only from Serbia but also from foreign teams. Given all these challenging circumstances, the wind is our biggest enemy, and we must exercise the utmost caution,” Čaušić said.

He said the situation is also stable on Mount Goč and the Stolovi mountain range near Kraljevo.

“The situation is similar there. At both fire sites, we have an active fire line approximately one to two kilometers long. In Lebane, near the village of Slišane, if there are no extreme changes in the weather, we hope that containment will be declared today,” Čaušić said.

He added that the situation is also stable in Vranje, stressing that the priority across Serbia is to protect human lives, homes and as much forest as possible.

“Because of the specific nature of Deliblatska Peščara, we want to bring this operation to an end as soon as possible. We hope that if we get through the weekend without any major flare-ups or renewed outbreaks, we will be able to breathe a sigh of relief and begin to see victory over this natural disaster,” Čaušić said.

Rain was not enough; Stolovi still burning

Dragan Reljić, director of the Stolovi Forestry Management, said today that the situation on Stolovi is better than it was two days ago, but that the rain that fell was not enough to put out the fire. He added that aerial firefighting operations are continuing.

Reljić said that the fire was tackled from the air yesterday afternoon by two helicopters, which helped significantly. However, he said it was difficult to make predictions because of changing wind patterns and rising temperatures during the day, which could cause the fire to spread rapidly.

“Nevertheless, optimism prevails. I have the impression that we are slowly surrounding it; only one fire line remains. I hope for the best. With the help of aerial firefighting, I think we can contain the fire relatively quickly,” Reljić told TV Prva.

He explained that in the upper section, toward Kraljevo, the fire had been stopped by firebreaks and was slowly moving down between the ridge and the Maglašnica River, where the terrain is extremely difficult to access.

“If the terrain were more accessible, after the rain it would be a done deal. However, it was impossible to intervene from the ground here. Still, I believe that with aerial assistance we could relatively quickly be talking about the end of the fire on Stolovi,” Reljić said.

He added that even after the fire is extinguished, 24-hour monitoring will continue on Stolovi.

“Because of the terrain and the remaining tree stumps, which can smolder for a long time, teams will remain on duty around the clock for another ten days or so,” Reljić said.
