Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš is on a two-day official visit to Serbia. Following a meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and talks between the two delegations, the two officials addressed the media.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that the friendship between the two countries is at a high level and is reflected not only in bilateral and political relations but also in increasingly strong economic ties and a growing volume of trade.

He expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Babiš and the Czech Republic for their support to Serbia on its European path.

"We discussed this, and I said, as a rational and realistic person, knowing how things are developing in the EU and understanding the position of European leaders and everything that is happening, that the most important thing for Serbia in the coming years is to be part of Europe’s single market and to have open borders both within the region and with all EU member states," Vučić said at the Palace of Serbia.

He added that it would be a huge success if Serbia did not depend on other people’s funds or on whether it could exercise a veto somewhere or have commissioners.

Vučić emphasized that Serbia is focused on its economic progress and said he is very satisfied with the pace of the country’s development.

"Today, we have a significantly higher growth rate than the EU average, and this is not just the first, second, or third year — it has been the case for several years in a row. Next year, the difference will be even greater. We will continue to reduce the gap and the difference in wealth between Western European countries and Serbia in the future. Listening to Prime Minister Babiš’s statements, I believe he shares a similar view, and that it would be necessary and beneficial to implement pragmatic and practical measures that would serve the interests of both Europe and candidate countries, as well as the Western Balkans and other parts of our continent," Vučić said.

He noted that the Czech Republic is becoming an increasingly important economic partner, adding that the volume of trade between the two countries was €430 million 12 years ago and has now reached €2.4 billion.

He added that Serbia and the Czech Republic would continue their closest cooperation.

"We asked for this, and Prime Minister Macut in particular had important discussions regarding healthcare and the transfer of certain knowledge from the Czech Republic in this field. As you know, this is an area in which we are investing a great deal and one that is extremely important to us, so that we can continue to improve," Vučić said, adding:

"I can say that I am happy to know Andrej Babiš well. We have been friends for many years, and when I say I am happy, it is because you can always hear many smart things from him, learn a great deal, and I used this opportunity to hear and learn as much as possible from him as one of the most experienced, wisest, and most capable leaders in Europe. I believe that this experience will also help us in the further development of our country," Vučić said.

He added that he was especially grateful to Prime Minister Babiš for his government’s decision for the Czech Republic to participate in EXPO.

Vučić said that Serbia and the Czech people are connected by a wonderful history and that they have gained much through their friendship, adding that Serbs have often looked to Czechs as role models and learned a great deal from them.

"For those who do not know, from the construction of Belgrade’s main railway station at the end of the 19th century, to the construction of the Slavija Hotel by František Nekvasil, and before that František Zach, who was an inspiration to Ilija Garašanin, to many other people, including Ignjat Bajloni, we have always had Masaryk, we have always had the closest relations, and we have learned and gained much from prominent Czechs," Vučić said.

Babiš’s address

Andrej Babiš thanked his hosts for the welcome and emphasized that Serbia and the Czech Republic are connected by long-standing good and friendly relations.

He recalled that he last visited Serbia in February 2021, during the coronavirus pandemic, when, as he noted, Serbia was among the most successful European countries in its fight against COVID-19.

"At that time, Mr. President donated 100,000 vaccines to the Czech Republic. At a moment when we were competing for vaccines within the European Union, which did not help us then, such things are not forgotten," Babiš said.

He noted that the two leaders had already met four times this year, in Davos, Paris, and now in Belgrade, and assessed that bilateral cooperation is developing successfully.

He emphasized that he is satisfied with the performance of Czech companies in Serbia and recalled that trade between the two countries has reached €2.4 billion.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš was officially welcomed by Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut in front of the Palace of Serbia, with the highest honors — a red carpet, an honor guard, and the playing of the national anthems.

A plenary meeting of the Serbian and Czech delegations was also held, led by Serbian Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Djuro Macut and the Czech prime minister.

Following the meeting with Macut, Babiš held talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

After the statements, a roundtable titled "Serbia–Czech Republic: Business Dialogue and New Opportunities for Economic Cooperation" will also be held, with the participation of President Vučić and the Czech prime minister.

In addition to Vučić and Babiš, business representatives will be addressed with opening remarks by President of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce Marko Čadež and President of the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic Jan Rafaj.

Vučić after talks with Babiš: "Once again, I expressed my gratitude for the confirmation of the Czech Republic’s participation in EXPO 2027."
