Commemoration held for Vladislav Jovanović; Vučić: There are few people like him, he belonged to all of Serbia
A commemoration has begun at the National Assembly of Serbia marking the death of diplomat, former foreign minister, and FR Yugoslavia’s ambassador to the UN Vladislav Jovanović, with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić also in attendance.
The commemoration is attended by the Jovanović family; Serbian Prime Minister Đuro Macut; government ministers Nenad Vujić, Jagoda Lazarević, Dejan Vuk Stanković, Nemanja Starović, Demo Beriša, and Snežana Paunović; President of the Belgrade City Assembly Nikola Nikodijević; former Serbian Prime Minister Nikola Šainović; as well as numerous friends and associates of Jovanović.
The commemoration began with a minute of silence and the paying of respects to Vladislav Jovanović.
Addressing those present, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said he first wanted to express great gratitude to Vladislav Jovanović and his family for everything he had done for his country.
“There are very few people who were devoted to the state. Vladislav Jovanović knew how to serve it in the best possible way. When someone is no longer in office, they are often forgotten here, but Vladislav Jovanović remained a symbol of an entire era—of seriousness and dedication. I regret that, for justified reasons, Ivica Dačić is not here today. I believe Vladislav belonged to all of Serbia. We have gathered to pay tribute to a patriot and a statesman. He grew up in a time of great upheaval. The diplomacy of a small country is a walk on a tightrope—that is what guided him,” Vučić said.
The President of Serbia added that he regretted that, for justified reasons, Ivica Dačić was not present at the commemoration today.
“I believe Vladislav belonged to all of Serbia, to each one of us, and he faithfully served the interests of his homeland. For a small country, neutrality is a way to survive clashes of giants; taking sides is always a voluntary act of putting a target on your own back. These words best summarize the immensely rich career of Vladislav Jovanović,” Vučić said.
Former Foreign Minister and former UN Ambassador Vladislav Jovanović passed away on February 21 at the age of 93.
Jovanović was born in Žitni Potok in 1933.
He completed high school in Belgrade in 1951 and later graduated from the Faculty of Law in Belgrade.
He began his diplomatic career in 1957 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Yugoslavia.
He served as head of diplomacy for two terms, as ambassador to the UN and Turkey, and held postings in Brussels and London.
He spent four years as an embassy attaché in Brussels (1960–1964), then served as second secretary at the embassy in Ankara (1967–1971), and as a counselor at the embassy in London (1975–1979).
He was SFRY Ambassador to Turkey from 1985 to 1989.
During the 1990s, he led several Yugoslav delegations in peace and other negotiations.
