China to the rescue of Germany: Merz seeks a solution to the crisis in Beijing
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz today welcomed the opportunity in Beijing to expand economic cooperation with China, but said that Germany’s growing trade deficit over the past five years “is not healthy” and needs to be addressed.
“For that reason, we are addressing this issue and want to open ways to reduce the trade deficit,” he told reporters.
Earlier today, Merz met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing, expressing his desire to expand Germany-China economic and diplomatic relations, while emphasizing the need for close cooperation between the European Union and China.
“I attach great importance to maintaining and deepening these relations wherever possible. We share responsibility in the world and should fulfill it together,” Merz said, noting that there is significant potential for further growth in both economies, according to ARD.
He highlighted the necessity of open communication channels and announced that relevant ministers will hold meetings in the coming months.
Premier Li, in the context of a customs dispute with the U.S., urged Germany to collaborate with China to safeguard free trade globally.
In light of unilateralism and protectionism in certain countries and regions, Li called for strengthening trust in cooperation and jointly supporting multilateralism and free trade.
Following the meeting, five intergovernmental agreements were signed in the presence of Li and Merz, and both sides agreed to continue cooperation on combating climate change and animal diseases.
From the German government’s perspective, the central topics of the visit included the dependence of German companies on Chinese raw materials and rare metals, as well as the issue of fair competition in the Chinese market.
