Several major thefts have occurred on the Resnik-Valjevo section of the Belgrade-Bar rail line, where the final phase of reconstruction works has started.

Major theft could delay completion of rail reconstruction

According to a statement, 1,000 kilograms of complete overhead electrical line were stolen on between the stations Lazarevac and Vreoci on the night of October 28, while thieves also took 280 liters of diesel belonging to the company, founded by Russian Railways.

The following night, at the Lazarevac station, a group of criminals took another 330 liters of fuel and made threats against security personnel.

"The scale of these events has jeopardized the deadlines for carrying out works on the important economic artery, the Belgrade-Bar line, and could cause these deadlines to be missed, as it is not always possible to quickly find and procure materials, given the scale of the thefts," said the statement.

This is not the first such case occurring at RDZ International construction sites - cable theft in 2015 jeopardized the safety of train traffic on the Belgrade-Pancevo rail line.

RZD International said it hoped that the perpetrators would soon be found, and that all works would be completed within the contractual deadlines.
