Ida,
if you had atleast a little knowledge, you would have read the FACT that these horses were taken in the lateral of 1991. Even with that these horses can live way into their 30's if well taken care of; another fact is that these horses do breed and if you had any knowledge of this breed you would also know that these horses do not come to their true white until they 7-10 yrs of age. And this falls into my next comment to you, if you have seen any of the pictures or the films about these suffering souls you would realize that not all of these horses are old; some are actually still very young and you can tell this by their coats having yet not turned. I really do hope in your defense that you really do not know anything about horses, atleast that might give you some what of an excuse, but if not and you do know about horses or own horses then God help your soul. Because that makes you just as sick as the farmer that is doing this to the Croatian Lipizzan horses. These horses DO NOT look like they are old they look like their insides are eating away at it's own body, they have gaping and infected seeping wounds and are dying. If this was a African child who was/and is in the same state of appearance; would you just say that the child just looked like he/she was old? Hell no you wouldn't. I really truly hope you are not some one like them!

What can be done to seize these horses and get them proper nutrition and medical attention before they die? What can Americans do to help?

There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for this cruelty. The authorities MUST take possession of rhose horses, and the man "caring" for those animals belongs in jail! Immediately!

Never try to excuse this sort of cruelty with the seemingly rational excuse "they're just old"! These horses need help, not further abuse excused by faulty information. Lipizzaners are long-lived and late bloomers. See here: http://www.spanish-norman.com/baroquebreeds.htm "The Lipizzan is perhaps the slowest to mature of the Iberian breeds, with animals not being fully grown until seven and not fully mature until ten. It is not uncommon for members of this breed to live late into their thirties, however." Further, there is a difference between normal aging in a horse (& people) and ill health and starvation. See these horses when they come to your area: http://www.lipizzaner.com/ for a view of properly-cared-for horses performing into late age, as proved by the Piber Stud brand I saw on one stallion in their troupe in 2005. He was thirty and you would have thought he was ten. This is not unusual for the breed. My own TB lived to be extremely aged and veterinarians could not believe her good condition when they learned how old she was.

I think these animals are dying of old age.

It's said that they first went to Croatia in 1982, so they'd be at least 25 years old - and that only if they were foals back them. Likely many are over 30. The lifespan for a horse in only about 25 years old.

Muscle tone and fat is lost with very old age, as well as appetite. One only has to look at people who are 85, 90, 95 and notice how frail and thin they usually are.

If this is true and the animals are mistreated, why on Earth won't relevant authoroties in Serbia take steps to redeem the situation? Especially if the caretaker has fooled the minister and has the nerve to ask for ridiculous pay for work that he obviously has not properly done, but kept the horses at some kind of freak animal concentration camp like conditions?
