Greek police used tear gas to prevent further escalation of violence between Serbian and Greek football. Greek side Aris and Red Star Belgrade played a UEFA Cup tie in Thessaloniki last night. Tear gas used on clashing football fans According to reports, a group of Greek fans, later joined by Serb fans, tried to get into the stadium without tickets. “About 100 hooligans attacked the police with smoke bombs and stones. They were well prepared for such an attack,” a police official said, adding that no-one had been seriously injured during the clashes. Reports said that fans of Aris’ rivals Olympiakos had also come to lend their support to Red Star. Yesterday, three Red Star fans were stabbed with knives in a café in Thessaloniki, when they were attacked by a group of about ten young men. They were taken to hospital. Police said that they were investigating the incident in order to find the culprits.
