Serbia's negotiations to join the EU are progressing well, but at the time it enters the organization the country "must align with the common foreign policy."

"Reports on the important chapters 23 and 24 have been adopted, and the Serbian government is already working on action plans for them. The opening of one or more chapters depends on a decision of EU member states and this happens when they feel that everything in this process is ready and that negotiations can start," he told the Večernje Novosti daily.He stressed that the EU is not coercing anyone to anything and that "Serbia has made a voluntary choice when it applied for membership in the EU."
"The EU did not ask Serbia to join. It was Serbia's decision to seek to join a community based on values, principles, the rule of law and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, for the sake of a more stable, secure and prosperous future of its citizens. And the EU has responded by launching the negotiations," said Stano.
"Regarding the sanctions against Russia, which were introduced by the EU on a clear legal basis because of the illegal annexation of Crimea and the continued destabilization of Ukraine, there are third countries that are aligning with them. It is expected that Serbia as a candidate country for EU membership will fully align with all of the decisions of the EU foreign policy at the time of its entry into the Union," he said.
The official added he "does not doubt the commitment of Serbia to the dialogue with Priština," recalling that European integration is a process of comprehensive reforms and harmonization with the rules and norms of the EU.
"This includes work not just on one chapter, but, gradually, on all 35. Although the dialogue is currently not conducted due to the post-election situation in Kosovo, Serbia continues to work on important issues. Integration is not a result or reflection of what happens in a few weeks or months at a time, but of constant reform efforts and commitment over the course of several years," Stano concluded.
