BELGRADE Early parliamentary elections could be held in Serbia either on February 23 or March 2, simultaneously with local elections in Belgrade, writes Politika. The daily is quoting high-ranking SNS officials, who said that one of the main reasons "for this merger" would be the party's desire "to defeat DS leader Dragan Djilas as convincingly as possible" in the elections for the city assembly - "but also to capitalize on the popularity that has grown since the forming of the government." Daily speculates about early elections in February or March But the newspaper speculates that since the SNS "still does not have a candidate strong enough for that, they count on having better results if they could - in case of simultaneous parliamentary elections - push to the forefront their main star - Aleksandar Vucic." "According to these claims, the leader of the Progressives made that decision, but the Socialists still don't feel like going to elections, and the basic question now is the weight carried by the word of officials from Western circles, who are currently closer to the position of Ivica Dacic," writes Politika. The Socialists, as another important element of the ruling coalition, prefer to wait for the spring elections for the assembly of Kosovo, and "when the political situation has been stabilized" in the province, possibly hold parliamentary elections as well. The daily says that the "dress rehearsal" will be the early local ballots in the Belgrade municipality of Vozdovac, scheduled for December 15. The fact that the parties took the campaigning seriously and have their leaders involved directly on the ground shows that the significance of the voting in Vozdovac "goes beyond local boundaries."
