Interior Minister Ivica Dacic says the participation of Serbian police officers in peacekeeping mission is in the best interest of his ministry. Sending Serbian officers to such missions abroad helps position the Interior Ministry (MUP) "in the region, Europe and the world". MUP officers turn peacekeepers At a meeting with officer about to join the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti, the minister said that the police is ready to participate in peacekeeping missions of the European Union and that there have already been talks regarding this with EU officials. “We believe that this is very important for the rating of our police. We have a well equipped and highly trained profession group of police officers that can set an example for others in the world,” Dacic said. He added that MUP officers who previously took part in missions abroad were among the best, and reminded that they participated in the work of a training center for peacekeeping missions in Italy. Dacic wished the new peacekeepers luck and success, and said that he hoped they would represent MUP and Serbia in Haiti and have "as few interventions and problems as possible". “I am sure that, just as before, the Serbian MUP members will have the best evaluations from the UN, and also the Haitian people," the minister continued. Five officers will be participating in the Haitian mission, including one woman – the chief police inspector of the Police Directorate, Biljana Lazarevic. Lazarevic will be the commanding officer of the second MUP contingent in Haiti. Previously, she participated in a peacekeeping mission in Liberia in 2004. There will also be anti-terrorism unit members, gendarmerie officials and MUP protection unit members headed to Haiti. Officers from the Counter-Terror Unit (PTJ), Gendarmerie and MUP Protection and Rescue Unit will also travel to Haiti. Since 2003, 23 MUP members have participate in peacekeeping missions in Liberia. There are currently six Serbian police officers still in that country.
