The Hague says that the verdict in the case of the former commander of Bosnian Army HQ will be delivered on Sep. 15. In its closing statement, the prosecution called for a 15-year sentence for Rasim Delic’s failure to prevent or sanction members of the El Mujahid unit, over which he had effective control. Verdict against Bosniak general: Sep. 15 The defense called for Delic to be cleared because his guilt had not been proven. The defense claimed that the general did not have control over the El Mujahid at the critical time and thus could not prevent or sanction the crimes. According to the indictment, Delic is accused of command responsibility for the murders of a number of captured soldiers from the Croatian Defense Council on June 8, 1993—the day he was appointed commander of Bosnian Muslim Army HQ—by Mujahedin members of the Third Corps of the Bosnian Muslim Army in the village of Maline, near Travnik. The general is also charged with the brutal murder of the three members of the Republic of Srpska Army (VRS), one of whom was decapitated, as well as with harsh treatment of other Serb soldiers captured in the proximity of Zavidovici village by the Mujahedin in July 1995. Delic is also accused of the death of approximately 60 Serb soldiers taken prisoner after the Bosnian Army’s capture of Vozuca. The general voluntarily surrendered to the Hague Tribunal in February 2005. He pleaded not guilty and was granted temporary release until the beginning of the trial. Rasim Delic (FoNet, archive)
