Top officials of the Serbian and Republic of Srpska (RS) interior ministries (MUP) addressed a news conference in Belgrade today. Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said that 25 suspects were arrested in Serbia and Bosnia yesterday, all believed to be members of an international criminal gang active in the region. Serbian, RS MUP brass on gang arrests "The members of the group have been accused of murder, drug and arms trafficking, auto theft and money laundering," he stated. Serbian MUP special police took nine suspects into custody, including suspected ringleader Darko Elez; their RS colleagues made ten arrests, while police in the second Bosnian entity, the Federation, netted five. In Croatia, another suspected member of the crime group was detained. Three of those arrested in Bosnia were themselves police officers, RS Police Director Uros Pena told reporters. His Serbian counterpart Milorad Veljovic also mentioned that last night's shootout in downtown Belgrade that left two people wounded "might have something to do with the arrested group". He added that it is possible that Elez's gang was "connected to some criminal group in Montenegro". The reporters in Belgrade this Wednesday heard that the raids came after several months of coordinated work between police forces in the region. Elez and his gang had a large amount of cash and real estate and their disposal, including five apartments in Belgrade, two in Novi Sad, 13 luxury cars, as well as safes and accounts in several banks. Also today, the international high representative in Bosnia, Valentin Inzko, welcomed the joint police operation and said it sends "a positive signal to the EU that police agencies can contribute to the strengthening of the rule of law in Bosnia-Herzegovina", his office announced.
