The Swedish government stated today that it had turned down former Republic of Srpska (RS) President Biljana Plavsic’s appeal to be released on parole. Stockholm did not say why 78-year-old Plavsic’s appeal to be released before the end of her sentence from a Swedish prison had been rejected. She is currently serving an 11-year war crimes sentence. Sweden throws out Plavsic appeal Plavsic, who is due for release in 2013, was a key figure in the Bosnian Serb government during the war in 1992-95. She was convicted of planning the “ethnic cleansing” of non-Serbs who lived in predominantly Serb communities in the RS. She appealed for early release in June on the grounds of old age and ill health. Sweden denied a previous similar appeal lodged in April 2004. Plavsic is the only woman to be convicted by the Hague Tribunal for crimes against humanity. She is currently serving her sentence in the Heisenberg women’s prison, where she has been since June 2003.
