Sweden throws out Plavšić appeal

The Swedish government stated today that it had turned down former Republic of Srpska (RS) President Biljana Plavsic’s appeal to be released on parole. Stockholm did not say why 78-year-old Plavsic’s appeal to be released before the end of her sentence from a Swedish prison had been rejected. She is currently serving an 11-year war crimes sentence. She was convicted of planning the “ethnic cleansing” of non-Serbs who lived in predominantly Serb communities in the RS. Plavsic is the only woman to be convicted by the Hague Tribunal for crimes against humanity. She is currently serving her sentence in the Heisenberg women’s prison, where she has been since June 2003.
