The SPS has confirmed that it will file an official application for membership of the Socialist International (SI). The application will be filed at the SI Congress that began in Athens yesterday and will run until July 3. SPS seeks admittance to SI Obtaining full-time membership involves several phases – from observer status, via associate membership, through to fully-fledged membership. Senior Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) officials are attending the congress in a guest capacity, headed by party leader Ivica Dacic. “It’s very important that the president of the Socialist International and the leader of PASOK, Yorgos Papandreou, welcomed the formation of a pro-European government in Serbia, and particularly the presence of the Democratic Party (DS) and the SPS, as a future coalition partner of the DS, which is already a member of the SI,” Dacic said. Also attending the congress will be President Boris Tadic, whose party is a constitutive member. At yesterday’s session, the Democratic Party of Socialists, led by Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and the Republika of Srpska’s Alliance of Independent Social-Democrats, led by Milorad Dodik, were granted fully-fledged membership.
