Members of the US Senate have received classified information from government officials and drone industry experts about hundreds of incursions by Chinese DJI drones into the airspace over the US Capital, Politico reports.Drones are prohibited from entering the safe airspace over Washington, but surveillance of it can easily be breached.
This news raised suspicions of espionage. DJI is not a Chinese government company, but some of DJI's biggest investors have close ties to it.
More than 100 intruders over Washington in 45 days
Senator Marco Rubio, the Vice Chairman of the Senate Security Council, said:"Any technology product from China poses a real threat now and in the event of a conflict. Any such product may contain hidden information in software or hardware that could make us vulnerable at any time."
Data obtained by Congress shows the extent of this problem: more than 100 intruders entered Washington's airspace with "special overflight rules" in just 45 days. To be able to fly over this area, drone owners must have a special permit. However, these aircrafts did not have that.
This situation is somewhat reminiscent of "Cafe Ground Zero," a Cold War era story in which Russian spies believed that a hot dog stand outside the Pentagon was a secret military installation. They were led to this by a satellite image that showed people coming to the stand at the same time every day.
