BBC is reporting that during the state of emergency, the police can arrest without a warrant and search people's homes.

The state of emergency must be approved by parliament, where the president has a majority.

The so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks in Tanta and Alexandria. Christian Copts have been their target in Egypt in the past, and the terrorist group has announced more attacks.

Sisi said that the war against the jihadists will be "long and painful", and that the state of emergency will be established after taking all "legal and constitutional steps".

Egyptian President earlier ordered the army deployed across the country to protect "vital and important points."

The attacks occurred on one of the most important dates in the Christian calendar, which marks the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

They also came a few weeks before the expected visit of Pope Francis, who should support Christians in Egypt. Copts make up about 10 percent of the population in this north African country.
