A series of explosions in Brussels on Monday have left at least 34 persons dead and more than 170 injured, according to media reports.

There has been no official confirmation of the number of victims, while the authorities are treating the incidents as acts of terrorism. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Videos posted on the internet show panic-stricken passengers running from the part of the airport. Hundreds of passengers ran to escape the building of the Brussels airport on Tuesday morning after two explosions tool place.

Journalists who were at the airport described a scene of complete confusion, with passengers running to reach emergency exits.

Security has been raised to the highest level in Brussels, with strong police and army forces deployed to the streets. The airport and the underground railway, along with the public transportation system, have been evacuated and closed.

Local media are reporting on Monday that "shots and shouts in Arabic" were heard at the airport before the explosions, but this has not been confirmed.
