Turkish Minister for European Affairs Egemen Bagis says Europe is facing a credibility problem when it comes to his country. According to Bagis, who is currently on a visit to Slovenia, Turkey was promised EU membership in 1959. Turkey accuses EU of "double standards" For this reason, the Turkish minister stated that the EU is implementing double standards when it comes to accepting new members. Bagis also noted that Turkey has opened 13 association process chapters - out of a total of 33 - but that this would have been done more efficiently "had there not been for the blockade". Turkey is facing EU's open resistance because it is yet to recognized the Republic of Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, while it took Ankara 45 years to start association negotiations. Germany, Cyprus and France are saying that Turkey does not belong in the EU, and that Brussels and Ankara should instead forge a privileged partnership. But Bagis - who is his country's chief negotiator with the EU - says that "some countries in Europe should rid themselves of prejudices aimed against the Muslim Turkey". This is especially true, he asserted, since the EU "is not a Christian club", but should instead be "a peace process of a kind".
