I don't get why Turkey wants to be part of the EU. They have been doing just fine over the past decade,in fact much better than most of the EU club members. They should take a glance at their neighbor just to the west of their border and see the results of the CLUB.

Absolutely nothing to be gained by joining the EU, other than, perhaps, political influence ( since Turkey is a large country).

With Greece, Ireland, Portugal and (soon) Spain declaring bankruptcy, it baffles me why anyone would want to join the CLUB.

I agree, Turkey has no place in the EU at present, and probably never will have, but let's not get too sentimental over the Kurds. They're like the Albs for you or the Irish for us - a Kurdish state would be infinitely more primitive, criminal and Islamist than Turkey is. The very powerful Turkish mafia is actually largely a Kurdish mafia. Some people (you paying attention, Albs?) are not oppressed merely through bad luck.

"But Bagis - who is his country's chief negotiator with the EU - says that "some countries in Europe should rid themselves of prejudices aimed against the Muslim Turkey". "

what about "Muslim Albania" and "Muslim Kosova" with reference to EU? Any views anyone?

"According to Bagis, who is currently on a visit to Slovenia, Turkey was promised EU membership in 1959."

Pray tell dear neo-ottoman (and I don't mean the sofa), for how many years since 1959 was Turkey a 'democracy'? I really don't know what he is complaining about, after all Turkey gets to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest along with that other 'european' state, Israel!

Of course his remarks are not aimed at the international audience but the domestic audience who understand the importance of glossing over minor details such as a police state, the war against the kurds etc. Even as I write this, 'democratic turkey' has 27 journalists in jail, and many more under investigation for among other things 'insulting the state' which I believe was included in the Attaturkist constitution.

Let us not forget Hrans Dink, editor murdered by a peasant who travelled far from the interior to do the deed. Even the fabulous and world renoun turkish writer Orhan Pamuk has faced threats in this 'democratic' Turkey which still surpresses the Kurds and holds an economic embargo against Armenia simply to keep on side with the west's other favorite dictator who just happens to control massive energy reserves, Azerbaijan's Ilham Aliev who banned BBC, DW & VOA from the country over a year ago.

Are these the values that Turkey wishes to impress up on the Balkans with its fantasist neo-ottoman cravings? There is not much european about Turkey apart from the fawning middle classes who did well under the attaturkist regime, and the new middle classes who support the current 'political islam'.

Turkish literacy rate is 87.9%, or 104 out of 178 countries in the world, turkish women hit the hardes. Turkey would do better to spend its energies at home and come knocking on Europe's door when it can meet its high standards.

What the hell do you mean by typical autistic Islamic solipsism? Never heard anyone utter such a bizarre statement.

An ASIAN country like Turkey wants to elbow its way into the EUROPEAN Union and they have the gall to question the EU's credibility. Typical autistic Islamic solipsism.

There are good reasons why Turkey shouldn't be allowed EU membership.
Terrible human rights record, kurdish suppression ,occupation of Cyprus and denial of Armenian genocide-to name a few.

Europeans are also suspicious of Erdogan's infamous declaration that "minarets are our bayonets" which deep down reveals what his plan is.
Admitting Turkey to the EU would be tantamount to cultural suicide and will hasten the Islamisation of Europe.

This is especially true, he asserted, since the EU "is not a Christian club", but should instead be "a peace process of a kind".

EU is an abbreviation for what? European Union. European means Europe. Turkey is Asia, the major part, and the mentality of the majority (including the current islamist government under Erdogan.)
