In one of the biggest leaks in military history, more than 91,000 records of incidents and intelligence about the conflict were passed to WikiLeaks. The reports, while written by soldiers and intelligence officers, and mainly describing lethal military actions involving the United States military, also include intelligence information, reports of meetings with political figures, and related detail. The file called the Afghan War Diary contains details of 144 incidents in which coalition forces killed and wounded civilians. In 2008 French troops shot at a bus full of children because it had come too close to a military convoy. Eight children were wounded in the attack. Other reports record how a U.S. patrol machine-gunned a bus, wounding or killing 15 of its passengers. Polish troops mortared a village in 2007, killing a wedding party including a pregnant woman, in what was apparently a revenge attack. Human rights organizations said the files showed a systematic attempt to cover up details of civilian casualties and a lack of accountability. WikiLeaks has passed the information to three dailies – The New York Times, The Guardian and Der Spiegel. The documents suggest that Pakistan, an ostensible ally of the United States, allows representatives of its spy service to meet directly with the Taliban in secret strategy sessions to organize networks of militant groups that fight against American soldiers in Afghanistan, and even hatch plots to assassinate Afghan leaders. The White House has condemned the leak and claimed that the publication of details from the secret documents could put lives at risk. WikiLeaks has denied the allegations pointing out that they have removed names and details in some cases that would allow identifying military and intelligence officers. The White House points out that the incidents in question happened at the time when George Bush was the president and when the U.S. forces in Afghanistan did not have sufficient resources and equipment and that the current President Barack Obama adopted a new strategy for Afghanistan last year and allocated additional funds.
