Worldwide protests against Iranian stoning

Protests against an Iranian woman sentenced to stoning took place in 32 countries around the world. Human rights campaigners from the UK to as far afield as Brazil are trying to save the life of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. Worldwide protests against Iranian stoning Speaking at a rally in London, Maryam Namazie from Iran Solidarity said: “Over 100 people have been stoned in the last 31 years. There are 25 people awaiting death by stoning right now, including Sakineh. So what we are hoping to do is save Sakineh’s life, and end stoning altogether. It is medieval, it is brutal, it is barbaric. It should have no place in the 21st century.” Sakineh was originally sentenced to death by stoning for adultery, after already receiving 99 lashes. However, the execution has been postponed since the outcry from her children living in the West. Celebrities and politicians around the globe have also spoken out against the practice.
