In the last two years, the number of registered drug users in Belgrade has fallen, the City Health Department reports. According to figures from the Institute for Public Health up to December 31, 2007, four of every 1,000 citizens is a registered drug addict. Drug addiction in Belgrade on wane In 1997, the average age of registered drug addicts was 25—males 24.9, females 26.3—while in 2007, the average age was somewhat higher at 26.8 percent for both sexes. Among registered addicts, the most common are intravenous addicts—around 85 percent—while the remainder use predominantly psychoactive substances and those whose form of addiction is undetermined. However, the Institute of Public Health warns in its report that information on drug addicts is based only on data on addicts who have sought medical help. The report sees this as “only the tip of the iceberg in tackling drug addiction.”
