Croatian Agriculture Minister Petar Cobankovic will today visit neglected Lipizzaners held at a farm in Vojvodina. Cobankovic is on a one-day visit to Serbia at the invitation of his Serbian counterpart, Agriculture Minister Slobodan Milosavljevic. Croatian minister to visit neglected horses The two officials will discuss bilateral cooperation, exchange of experience related to the crop and drought situation, and settle the dispute over the Lipizzaner horses. The animals in question were transferred to the Bukinac farm in Novi Sad from Lipik in Croatia when war escalated there in1991. Croatia's agriculture ministry has already requested the return of the animals to their owners. Nonetheless, the owner of the farm has refused to comply, asking for EUR 300,000 in compensation for the costs he allegedly incurred looking after the horses. Meanwhile, animal rights group Freedom for Animals reported that Austrian vets from the Vier Pfoten society visited the farm on August 20 and found that the horses were underfed and in poor health. The group has recently called for the formation of an independent team of vets from Slovenia, Croatia, Austria and Serbia to look after the abused animals.
