In June, vets examined 70 Lipizzaners and ascertained they were in good health, confirmed by the agriculture minister. However, Freedom for Animals group reported that on August 20, Austrian vets from the Vier Pfoten society, on a visit to a farm in the Novi Sad suburb of Novo Naselje, had reported that, "the Lipizzaners’ [a Slovenian breed of white horse] ribs could be counted from far away." "Lipizzaner horses still starving" The report reads: "Their scapula bones were clearly discernible, while some horses were barely able to walk, and if they lay down or fell, they were either unable to get back up or did so with great difficulty." "As far as food is concerned, there was some straw scattered around, which they should have been using for bedding, not food." During his visit to Todor Bukinac’s estate where there five Lipizzaners are held, Agriculture Minister Slobodan Milosavljevic donated 20 tons of horse fodder, although Freedom for Animals claimes that this food never reached the animals, but was used by Bukinac to feed his other horses in another part of the estate. The association claimed that there were altogether ninety-four horses on the Novo Naselje estate and that twenty of these were hidden away during the minister’s visit. The report goes on to say that, "The veterinary inspection did not establish how many of the horses had been sold on the black market. We want those inspectors who have been in contact or had dealings with the Bukinac stud farm to be taken off the case." The unfortunate animals were transferred from Lipik in Croatia when war broke out in that country in 1991. Earlier this month, a spokesman for Croatia's agriculture ministry said that Serbia was due to return the horses to Croatia, "like it returned everything that was taken from Croatia during the war". But the owner of the farm wants EUR 300,000 in compensation for the cost of looking after the horses, the media reported at the time. Emaciated Lipizzaner in a farm near Novi Sad, Vojvodina (Beta)
