"If we do not invest in schools, we may have a little more money for some other things but we will be poorer in the future. Investing in knowledge, education and children is the biggest investment," Vucic said.

Vucic thanked the EU for the EUR 130,000 provided to build and equip the school, and for the assistance in rebuilding Obrenovac, a town devastated in the 2014 flooding.

"It is easy to take money from the EU - we in Serbia need to work more and rely on ourselves. We must work much more and more diligently - if we are not diligent and hard-working, we will not be able to achieve anything," Vucic said.

He noted he was satisfied with the other nine schools in the area that have been rebuilt, and added that a local sports venue and a theater remain to be completed, and that this should happen by June.

Vucic, Davenport, and Belgrade Mayor Sinisa Mali, who was also in Poljane today, will later in the day tour the reconstructed Gymnasium and the Agriculture-Chemistry secondary schools in Obrenovac.
