League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina (LSV) leader Nenad Canak says the Republic Broadcasting Agency (RRA) decision to ban their election videos is censorship “We are stunned by such RRA’s attitude toward the LSV,” he told a press conference in Belgrade. LSV accuses broadcasting agency of censorship Canak said that the RRA had called an emergency session and banned the LSV’s campaign video which pointed to problems during the privatization of the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS). The LSV stressed in the video that former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic had hijacked the company, that it had later been sold by Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Kostunica and that Vojvodina would request compensation. The LSV leader said that the RRA had banned the video because it violated the regulation that names must not be mentioned in campaign ads. He added that the RRA had then reacted to LSV’s campaign video in which he appeared with his child, instructing broadcasters that they should not air videos in which children were used for political purposes and in which their dignity was offended, thus discouraging them from airing the video. “I do not understand how the child’s dignity was offended here,” Canak said and added that this was not the first time that politicians appeared in election videos with children. He noted that the RRA had been ignoring the fact that not only the presidential, parliamentary and local elections would be held on May 6 but that the provincial elections would be held as well. “The provincial elections are in the shadow of the other elections which shows that the Vojvodina institutions are underestimated,” Canak said and added that the RRA had explained that the broadcasters were allowed to cover the election campaign for provincial elections if they wanted. “The RRA must seriously think whether its actions are principled,” he stressed. Čanak said that the RRA had called an emergency session and banned the LSV’s campaign video which pointed to problems during the privatization of the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS).

The LSV stressed in the video that former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milošević had hijacked the company, that it had later been sold by Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) leader Vojislav Koštunica and that Vojvodina would request compensation.

“I do not understand how the child’s dignity was offended here,” Čanak said and added that this was not the first time that politicians appeared in election videos with children.

He noted that the RRA had been ignoring the fact that not only the presidential, parliamentary and local elections would be held on May 6 but that the provincial elections would be held as well.

“The provincial elections are in the shadow of the other elections which shows that the Vojvodina institutions are underestimated,” Čanak said and added that the RRA had explained that the broadcasters were allowed to cover the election campaign for provincial elections if they wanted.

“The RRA must seriously think whether its actions are principled,” he stressed.

The LSV leader announced that the party had prepared a new set of election videos.
