Serbian ombudsman will open three offices in Serbia's volatile south this week, after a period of preparations which lasted almost one year. “The first ombudsman office outside Belgrade will be opened in Bujanovac on Wednesday, while two more offices, in Presevo and Medvedja, will start working on Thursday and Friday respectively,” it was stated during a news conference of the Coordination Body for Southern Serbia. Ombudsman offices to open in south Serbian Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic stated that one of the reasons why the offices will be opened in these three towns is the great number of complaints submitted by the municipalities in this region. “From these municipalities, we received 10 complaints in 2007, another 50 in 2008, as many as 116 in 2009 and 95 in the first five months of this year. This makes up a total of 271 complaints, which is reason enough for such a decision,” Jankovic said. Commissioner for Information of Public Importance Rodoljub Sabic stated in Bujanovac that he and Jankovic have come to Serbia's south to change things. “There is no reason to sit and wait for the global economic crisis to end and then take action, whereas we can immediately tackle the problems of people living here,” Sabic said. UN Resident Coordinator William Infante and Deputy Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia Thomas Moore, who also attended the press conference, gave strong support the ombudsman's idea. The southern region of Serbia, which is located close to the administrative line with Kosovo, is home to the largest ethnic Albanian community outside the province itself.
