President Boris Tadić said that the Western Balkans region is tearing down its “Berlin Wall” with the its aspirations for joining the European Union.

He said that the walls will be broken down when the region joins the EU, adding that this historical moment will complete the process of European unification.
Tadić spoke at a commemoration of 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, held in the Sava Center.
German ambassador to Serbia Wolfram Maas gave Tadić a piece of the Berlin Wall, stating that once the wall fell, Germany was given a new chance.
Tadić said that the fall of the wall did not only signal a new beginning in German history, but also made the vision of achieving European unity possible—which he called one of the greatest political and peace projects in recent world history.
The Serbian President said that Serbia tore down its “Berlin Wall” on October 5, 2000, by overcoming the undemocratic regime of the 1990s.
“Today, there is another wall for our citizens to tear down in the near future, which did not allow them to move freely and forced them through the degrading process of long waits for visas in lines in front of foreign embassies,” Tadić said.
“The entire Western Balkans will tear down its ‘Berlin Walls,’ and only when all of the countries of our region become full-fledged members of the EU, will the process of European unification be completed in this historical moment,” Tadić said.
