Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic expects that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's visit to Serbia will strengthen the ties between the two countries. "Relations between Serbia and Russia are traditionally close, they have endured for centuries, but due to historical circumstances, this will be the first time that the president of the Russian Federation arrives on a state visit to the Republic of Serbia. This alone gives the visit a historic character," said Jeremic. Jeremic travels to Moscow ahead of Medvedev visit The minister will leave for Moscow today for final preparations for Medvedev's visit later this month, and is scheduled to meet with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and representatives of the presidential administration. "Belgrade expects the Russian president's visit to confirm the unity of Serbia and Russia on the political front, but also to contribute to opening up of new possibilities for cooperation, above all in the realm of the economy," Jeremic told Beta news agency. "This is a very important visit for Serbia… I expect that the ties between Serbia and Russia will be confirmed and strengthened with this historic visit of the Russian president," he continued. The minister said that one of the topics of conversation in Belgrade will be the future security architecture of the Euro-Asian space – something that is already debated within the OSCE and other international organizations. Medvedev is due to arrive here on October 20, and Jeremic believes that the symbolism of the date is of exceptional importance – "that is when Russia and Serbia will begin to celebrate the 65th anniversary of victory over fascism together". "It is not by chance that the president of the Russian Federation is arriving in Belgrade on precisely that day, and we are honored by the fact that in a way, Russia will start the grand celebration of the 65th anniversary of victory over fascism – that will culminate on May 9, 2010 in Moscow – precisely with Medvedev's visit to Belgrade" the minister said.
