Slobodan Samardzic and Vuk Jeremic said late Wednesday Serbia had reason for optimism ahead of the continued Kosovo talks. Samardzic (DSS) and Jeremic (DS), in charge of Kosovo and foreign affairs portfolios in the Kostunica cabinet, stressed that Belgrade had reasons for optimism, "because negotiations on the final status of the province had continued, a request made by Serbian authorities. Serbian side voices Kosovo optimism Another reason, according to them, was the unified policy of the top state bodies which "achieved results in New York," since the negotiating process was not held "in the tone that had been present weeks before that." The two ministers, speaking for the state television, warned that a unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence would result in creation of other hotspots, primarily in the Balkans. "The most sensitive issue in the region, the borders, should not be touched. If the alteration of borders is brought into question, even as part of oral agreements, this will set a bad precedent for other unresolved ethnic disputes, primarily in the Balkans," Samardzic said. "We are fighting for the preservation of Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, we do not offer Albanians, and they are not interested in, reintegration of Kosovo in Serbia; instead, we offer them the widest possible autonomy and we keep some attributes of sovereignty for us," Jeremic explained.
