EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana says that the direct Kosovo talks in New York have been "constructive." Solana is attending an informal meeting of EU member states’ defense ministers in the Portuguese city of Evora. Solana: Direct Kosovo talks constructive He told a news conference on Saturday it was impossible to say that much was achieved in the New York meeting, but added that the first direct talks between Serbian government and ethnic Albanian delegations were "held in a casual and constructive atmosphere." Both sides suggested meeting again in Brussels on October 14, and according to Solana, there will be a score of such meetings with the crucial role of the mediating Troika comprised of envoys from Russia, the United States and the European Union. However, Solana declined to answer what the EU would do if Belgrade and Pristina fall short of reaching a compromise by December 10, when the Troika is to submit progress report to the UN secretary-general. “The two sides are engaged in the negotiating process and no one can talk about the results at this moment,” concluded Solana.
