“Military service now lasts six months, which simply does not pay off. It is not possible to appropriately train a soldier in such a short period of time.”

“Six months are not enough to prepare a soldier. Moreover, there is not enough money to include them into army reserves. All in all, it is a poor investment,” he said.

“If you have a limited number of grenades, its better if a professional soldier fires five of them a year, and not a draftee that fires one and then goes home after the service term ends. Draftees can never give back what has been invested in their training,” Ponoš explained.

Zoran Dragišić from the Faculty of Civil Defense told B92 that even though the professional army would have fewer soldiers, all of them would be appropriately trained and better equipped.

“Our security threats are such that we are not in need of a mass army in order to react. I agree with those who say it is better to have a smaller army made up of trained professionals, and to invest in modern strategies,” he said.

In his opinion, a soldiers and a policeman should be equally paid, stressing that the 2008 budget will have to include funds for full military profesionalization.

It is realistic to expect for the process to successfully end in 2010. However, it is necessary to adopt appropriate legislation in terms of laws on the Serbian Army and defense, which should make the parliamentary agenda this fall.
