Some 10,000 people marched through central Budapest on Saturday, protesting against government-initiated reforms. Organized by NOE (the national association of families with several children) the demonstrators gathered at the Fiumei Street Cemetery to walk through the city center to Parliament, demanding that the government withdraw "measures that would compromise the future of families and children." Hungary: Thousands protest reforms "The government deprives children of future opportunities, generates chaos and fear to meet its own selfish goals, therefore it must resign," Ildiko Pelcz Gall, deputy chairman of the main opposition Fidesz party, told reporters in front of Parliament in Kossuth Square. Adam Torok, NOE's general secretary, criticized the government for "just talking about equal opportunities while building new offices for itself, closing down schools and hospitals, dismissing teachers, imposing tuition fees on students and forcing doctors to find better-paid jobs in other countries." Around 30 civil groups including a wide range of associations representing teachers, doctors, social service workers and local governments also joined the demonstration.
