U.S. insurer Hagerty, which specializes in collector vehicles, organized a poll to find out which are the world's ugliest cars. The company's clients, considered automobile connoisseurs, decided to place Zastava's Yugo model on the list diplomatically dubbed, "The Most Questionable Car Designs of All Time", in effect, the ugliest designs that the global auto industry ever came up with. Yugo, one of world's ugliest cars Perhaps surprisingly, Yugo did not win the top spot in the survey, however it placed high, at number two. 2,500 of Hagerty clients who deliberated models that either were present or are still sold in the U.S. market, decided that AMC Pacer took the proverbial cake when it came to the world's ugliest car. The Serbian car was followed by Ford Pinto, Pontiac Aztek, and Chevrolet Vega. However, Yugo is not only a symbol of poor design and quality, but also of Serbia's only carmaker's troubles. The Kragujevac-based Zastava has for years produced the model with state subsidies, since a market price of EUR 6,500, that would make it profitable, would at the same time render it impossible to sell. The factory has therefore announced it will discontinue with the production of its heavily subsidized domestic program, and turn to cooperation with global automobile industry leaders, such as Fiat and General Motors. Zastava's privatization tender has been announced for December. Not an object of desire: Zastava's Yugo (Photo: hagerty.com)
