The Supreme Court has rejected all of the defense’s appeals.

The court determined in the third degree that the second verdict did not contain any serious violations of the criminal proceedings.

Ulemek was sentenced to a prison sentence of 40 years for joining a criminal enterprise and for unconstitutional activities and attempted murder, while Jovanović also received 40 years for the murder of the prime minister, attempted murder and belonging to a criminal enterprise set up to conduct hostile activities.

Đinđić was the Serbian prime minister when he wass killed on March 12, 2003. The court confirmed that Ulemek organized the assassination and that Jovanović fired the bullets that killed Đinđić.

Final verdicts were earlier given for the crime to Zemun Clan members as well.

Jovanović and Ulemek, aka Legija, were both members of the now disbanded Special Operations Unit (JSO), accused of colluding with the Zemun-based crime group.

The Supreme Court confirmed on December 28, 2009 the final verdicts for all Zemun Clan members on trial except for Sretko Kalinić, whose sentence was decreased from 35 to 30 years, Željko Tojaga from 30 years to 15, and Dušan Krsmanović from 30 to 20 years in prison.

Aleksandar Simović, Ninoslav Konstantinović and Vladimir Milisavljević were sentenced to 35 years, Miloš Simović, Milan Jurišić and Branislav Bezarević received 30 years each, while Saša Pejaković was given eight years in jail.

Vladimir Milisavljević, Sretko Kalinić, Milan Jurišić, Ninoslav Konstantinović and Miloš Simović have been fugitives since 2003.

Those accused of Đinđić’s assassination were given a second verdict and sentenced to a total of 348 years in prison, while the first verdict gave them 378 years.

Zemun Clan leaders Dušan Spasojević and Mile Luković were killed on March 27, 2003, in the village of Meljak, near Belgrade. Serbian police (MUP) said at the time that the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ) officers shot and killed the pair as they resisted arrest.
