A court in Belgrade has turned down an application for an investigation to be conducted against former Minister Dragan Veselinov on charges of perjury.

A court in Belgrade has turned down an application for an investigation to be conducted against former Minister Dragan Veselinov on charges of perjury. The charges were brought by the mother of Katarina Maric, who died in a car accident caused by the driver of a jeep that the minister was traveling in at the time. Former minister escapes perjury charges The dead girl’s family accused Veselinov of giving false testimony at earlier hearings, when he said that the jeep had gone through a green light when it hit Maric at the junction of Beogradska and Njegoseva Streets on April 15, 2003. The former minister’s driver, Stevan Bakalov, was sentenced to five years in prison at the Belgrade District Court on March 3, 2006, which was later commuted to four by the Supreme Court in June 2007. Veselinov’s lawyer Nikola Barovic said that the proceedings against his client had been suspended, as “there were no grounds to suspect that Veselinov had committed the crime of perjury.” He added that the Second District had issued the ruling on March 27, and that Veselinov’s legal team had received it yesterday. Former minister escapes perjury charges

The dead girl’s family accused Veselinov of giving false testimony at earlier hearings, when he said that the jeep had gone through a green light when it hit Marić at the junction of Beogradska and Njegoševa Streets on April 15, 2003.

The former minister’s driver, Stevan Bakalov, was sentenced to five years in prison at the Belgrade District Court on March 3, 2006, which was later commuted to four by the Supreme Court in June 2007.

Veselinov’s lawyer Nikola Barović said that the proceedings against his client had been suspended, as “there were no grounds to suspect that Veselinov had committed the crime of perjury.”

He added that the Second District had issued the ruling on March 27, and that Veselinov’s legal team had received it yesterday.
