Ovcara suspects to remain in custody The Supreme Court rejected appeals submitted by the defense teams of Miroljub Vujovic, Stanko Vujanovic, Nada Kalaba, Vujo Zlatar, Miroslav Djankovic and Djordje Sosic, against the Belgrade District Court’s decision to remand them in custody. The Supreme Court explained that the crime in question was committed in particularly harsh circumstances, which justified their ruling to keep them in custody. The six are accused of the murder of over 200 Croatian prisoners at the Ovcara farm near Vukovar in November 1991. The retrial began in March 2007 after the Serbian Supreme Court had quashed the Belgrade District Court’s War Crimes Chamber first instance verdict. At the initial trial, commander of the Vukovar territorial defense Miroljub Vujovic, his deputy Stanko Vujanovic, volunteer unit "Leva Supoderica" commander Milan Lancuzanin, together with Predrag Milojevic, Predrag Dragovic, Djordje Sosic, Miroslav Djankovic, Ivan Atanasijevic and Sasa Radak were all sentenced to 20 years in prison. Vujo Zlatar, Milan Vojinovic and Jovica Peric received 15-year sentences; Predrag Madzarac and Nada Kalaba received 12 years, and Goran Mugosa five. Marko Ljuboja and Slobodan Katic were found not guilty.
