The trial for war crimes allegedly committed in Suva Reka in Kosovo in March 1999, reopened on Monday. The retrial was the result of a change in trial chamber. Suva Reka war crimes trial restarts The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. The defense called on the trial chamber to deny the rights of President of the Fund for Humanitarian Law Natasa Kandic to represent the victims, since she was head of the Fund. The request was turned down. The defendants include former officials of the Interior Ministry: Radoslav Mitrovic, Radojko Repanovic, Nenad Jovanovic, Sladjan Cukaric, Milorad Nisavic, Miroslav and Zoran Petkovic, and Ramiz Papic. They are accused of killing 48 civilians, mostly women, elderly people and children, of the Berisha family, on March 26, 1999 in Suva Reka, following clashes with members of the Kosovo Liberation Army. Mitrovic, Repanovic and Jovanovic are accused of violating international law in an armed conflict, and of ordering attacks on a part of the town populated by Albanian civilians. The remaining defendants are accused of robbing, pillaging and setting Albanian homes on fire, in addition to ordering the families to leave Suva Reka and relocate to Albania. According to court rules, the re-submission and presentation of evidence at the retrial is unnecessary.
