In the incident in the province of Kahramanmaraş, 13 more people were injured, six of them in critical condition, Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi said at a press conference, according to Reuters.
A 14-year-old student opened fire today in two classrooms at a high school in Turkey, marking the second such shooting in the country in two days.
He came to school armed with weapons believed to belong to his father, a retired police officer, said the governor of Kahramanmaraş, Mükerrem Ünlüer, adding that he carried five firearms and seven magazines, which he most likely took from his father, a former police officer.
It is not clear whether the attacker was killed by police or took his own life. According to Mustafa Çiftçi, the incident was “personally motivated,” and the circumstances of the shooting are under investigation.
Mustafa Çiftçi said that six of the 13 injured are in serious condition.
Justice Minister Akın Gürlek stated that authorities are conducting an investigation into the motives behind the attack, while the injured have been transferred to hospitals in the region.
He added that seven prosecutors have been assigned to the investigation into the shooting and that a ban has been imposed on the publication of information related to the incident.
The attack occurred a day after 16 people, mostly students, were injured when a former student opened fire at a high school in the nearby province of Şanlıurfa.
The attacker later took his own life. State broadcaster TRT identified the latest shooter as İsa Aras Mersinli and reported that his father had been detained for questioning.
Turkish authorities imposed a ban on broadcasting “traumatic” footage from the shooting, warning media organizations to limit their reporting to official statements. Parents rushed to the school in the Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş after hearing reports of the attack, according to NTV.
