Sri Lanka takes control of Iranian ship

Sri Lanka today took control of the Iranian vessel IRIS Bushehr and transferred more than 200 sailors to shore after the ship requested assistance while anchored outside national waters. The decision came amid rising tensions in the Indian Ocean following the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena by a U.S. submarine, reported AP.

Sri Lankan Navy spokesperson, Commander Budika Sampath, said the sailors were brought to Colombo port and that the ship will be moved to the eastern port of Trincomalee, about 265 kilometers northeast. Some crew members remained on board to assist with navigation.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Dissanayake emphasized that the country is acting neutrally and in accordance with international law, highlighting the humanitarian aspect of the operation.

“We will not be biased toward any state, nor will we be subservient to any state,” he said.

The incident led to a humanitarian evacuation of 32 sailors and the recovery of 87 bodies following the attack on IRIS Dena, a ship that had participated in joint naval exercises organized by India and the U.S.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the sinking a 'crime at sea'.
