Trump: What if we invoke Article 5?
U.S. President Donald Trump said that NATO should be “tested” in response to illegal immigration at the southern U.S. border, adding that the United States could invoke Article 5, the alliance’s principle of collective defense.
“Maybe we should have tested NATO and invoked Article 5, so that NATO would come here and protect our southern border from further invasions of illegal immigrants. That way, we could free up many Border Patrol agents for other tasks,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
His comments followed criticism that NATO is not fully standing behind the United States, after statements by EU officials at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, who criticized Washington’s attempt to purchase Greenland.
“The problem with NATO is that we would be there for them 100 percent, but I’m not sure they would be there for us,” Trump said on Wednesday from the main podium in Davos.
He was then challenged by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who told the U.S. president to his face that he was mistaken, reminding him of the sacrifices made by Europeans during the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan.
However, that was not the end of it, as Trump again criticized U.S. allies in NATO, claiming that troops from allied countries during the 20-year conflict in Afghanistan had “stayed somewhat on the sidelines and somewhat away from the front lines.” He reiterated in an interview with Fox News that he was “not sure” NATO would defend the United States in the event of an attack.
