Trump: We will hit them like they have never been hit before
U.S. President Donald Trump said that Iranian authorities have reached out to the United States seeking negotiations, while he is considering, as he put it, a “very strong” military action against Iranian regime over deadly measures taken against protesters.
“They called yesterday. Iran reached out to negotiate. The leaders of Iran want to negotiate. I think they are tired of American strikes. Iran wants to negotiate with us,” Trump said last night, CNN reports today.
Trump emphasized that his administration is monitoring the deadly protests in Iran and continues to consider the possibility of military intervention.
“Apparently, some people who shouldn’t have been killed were killed. Iranian authorities are violent. I don’t know if the Iranian leaders simply rule through violence, but we take this very seriously. The U.S. military is watching, and we are considering some very strong options,” Trump said in a conversation with reporters aboard Air Force One.
When asked whether Iran had crossed the “red line” he had previously set regarding the killing of protesters, Trump said that “it looks like they are starting.”
When asked how the U.S. would respond if Iran struck American military bases, Trump replied, “We will hit them like they have never been hit before.”
Trump also confirmed that his administration might discuss with Elon Musk providing Iranians access to Starlink, Musk’s satellite internet service, since internet connections in Iran have been down for several days.
Trump’s comments came days after the U.S. president told reporters that America would intervene if Tehran continued to carry out deadly violence against protesters.
CNN reported on Sunday that Trump is considering various intervention options, ranging from military strikes to new sanctions against key figures of the Iranian regime.
Earlier on Sunday, CNN also reported that there is concern within the U.S. administration that military strikes could undermine the protests in Iran, confirming that Trump is reviewing a range of potential military options and has been briefed in recent days on different intervention plans.
