Brussels' plan for Gaza revealed: Is the EU training 3,000 Palestinian police officers?
European Union foreign ministers will discuss next week a proposal for the European bloc to take a leading role in training 3,000 Palestinian police officers, with the aim of eventually deploying them in Gaza.
In the document prepared by the EU’s diplomatic body ahead of the ministers’ meeting on November 20, which Reuters has seen, officials outlined options for contributing to the implementation of U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza.
Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas agreed on the first phase of this plan in October, but the implementation of the remaining parts of the agreement remains highly uncertain, the agency reports.
In the document, the European External Action Service presented proposals to expand two civilian missions of the European bloc in the region, which focus on assistance related to borders and support for police and judicial reforms of the Palestinian Authority (PA).
The EU police mission could take a leading role in training Palestinian police in Gaza by providing direct training and support for around 3,000 Palestinian police officers from Gaza, with the goal of training up to 13,000 Palestinian police officers, the document states.
The document also mentions the idea of expanding the EU’s civilian border-monitoring mission in Rafah to other border crossings; however, the prospects of the EU launching these initiatives are, for now, uncertain.
