Comet Lemon to pass close to Earth: Here's when it will be visible
Comet Lemon is expected to make its closest approach to Earth in about 1,300 years on Tuesday, offering excellent viewing opportunities of the greenish cosmic “snowball” until November 2.
Although the comet will be difficult to see with the naked eye, it can be captured with long-exposure photography aimed low toward the western sky about an hour after sunset, according to Japan’s National Astronomical Observatory, as reported by Kyodo.
Observers in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido managed to clearly photograph the comet near the constellation Ursa Major in the northwestern sky between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. yesterday.
The comet, named after the Mount Lemmon Observatory in the U.S. state of Arizona where it was discovered during a survey in January, follows an elongated elliptical orbit around the Sun.
It is estimated that the comet last approached Earth about 1,300 years ago, and its next close approach is expected in roughly 1,100 years.
From Thursday until November 2, the comet will appear about an hour after sunset, making it easier to observe.
It may be faintly visible to the naked eye in areas with minimal light pollution and under clear skies.
