The war enters a new phase; Ukrainians receive weapons that change the course of the war?
The Kremlin issued a stern warning to the United States, saying that allowing Ukraine to use US Tomahawk cruise missiles against targets in Russia could mean "direct US military involvement in the conflict".
The reaction comes after it was announced that the Trump administration is considering a request from Kyiv to deliver these long-range weapons that could easily reach Moscow.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov asked several questions yesterday that highlight Moscow's concerns.
"The question, as before, is the following: who can launch these missiles? Can they be launched only by Ukrainians or must American soldiers do it? Who determines the targeting of these missiles? The American side or the Ukrainians themselves?" Peskov asked.
A request that could change the course of the war
Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the American portal "Axios" that he asked Trump for "one thing" that could force Russia to end the war. A Ukrainian official later confirmed that it was precisely the "Tomahawk" missiles, whose range of 2,500 kilometers far exceeds anything delivered to Kyiv so far. According to the plan, Washington would sell the missiles to European allies, who would then forward them to Ukraine.
Zelensky further hardened his rhetoric on Friday, telling Russian officials in Moscow to check "where their shelters are" if President Putin rejects a peace deal or ceasefire.
A game-changing weapon
With a range of up to 2,400 kilometers and a warhead of 450 kilograms, this cruise missile is far more effective than any similar long-range weapon that Western allies have so far donated to Kyiv. Former US President Joe Biden rejected a similar request, which was part of the 10-point "Victory Plan" presented by Zelensky at the end of Biden's term.
At the time, it was considered too risky to deliver such missiles as they could hit targets in Moscow and potentially escalate the conflict. But as a sign of growing optimism, Zelensky revealed to the "Axios" agency that Trump told him during the meeting: "We will work on it."
Escalation of conflict
Although he previously called Zelensky a "dictator" and accused him of starting the war, Trump seems to have changed his stance. Last week he stated that he believes that Ukraine can regain all its territories.
"I think that Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and RETURN all of Ukraine to its original form," Trump wrote on the "Trut Social" social network after his speech at the UN summit in New York.
Trump authorized long-range strikes
Keith Kellogg, US President Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, confirmed yesterday that Trump had given approval to Kyiv to carry out long-range strikes on Russian territory. Kellogg stated this in an interview with "Fox News".
When directly asked if Trump's position means that Ukraine can carry out long-range strikes against Russia, Kellogg answered in the affirmative.
"I think, reading what he said, and reading what Vice President Vance and Secretary Rubio said, the answer is yes. Use the deep strike capability," he said.
Kellogg also emphasized that "there are no such things as sanctuaries."
Problem with Pentagon
However, when asked if Ukrainian forces have permission to use US-supplied weapons in this way, Kellogg admitted that the situation is "mixed".
"Sometimes they get permission, sometimes they don't. I think everyone should follow the president's instructions. He is the commander in chief according to the Constitution and everyone must obey him. If the president goes left, you go left. If he says go right, you go right," Kellogg said, noting that the Pentagon sometimes does not implement the president's decisions.
