Dramatic interview: America? Everyone, start preparing
The President of Estonia, Alar Karis, in an interview with Politico, says that European countries bordering Russia should prepare for the possibility that Washington withdraws part of its soldiers from the region.
Karis revealed that US President Donald Trump personally warned about the importance of the US military presence in Eastern Europe, when the two leaders sat together for almost two hours in April at the funeral of Pope Francis.
"I explained everything to him," said Karis in the Estonian representative office at the European Union. "The presence of American soldiers in Estonia - not only in Estonia, but also in Europe - is of crucial importance. And not only for Europe, but also for the United States itself."
Although he was partially reassured by Trump's statements, especially those made this week, when the US president promised that American soldiers would remain in Poland, Karis emphasized that it is "very difficult to predict" what Washington will do in the Baltics.
That's why, he adds, countries like Estonia "must be ready for every scenario", and the possibility of the withdrawal of NATO's largest member "means that we have to build our capacities".
The United States currently has about 2,000 troops stationed in the Baltic states of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia as part of an increased force following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February.
By the way, the Pentagon is currently conducting a review of the global distribution of forces, the results of which are expected at the end of the month.
By the way, Karis arrived in Brussels for talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, at the same time when a group of European leaders from the so-called "coalition of the willing", working on security guarantees for Ukraine.
Moscow's reaction to this arrived, from where it was announced that Russia will not accept the presence of foreign troops in Ukraine as part of a possible ceasefire.
When asked if he expects Trump to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Estonian president - whose country has already pledged soldiers for the Ukrainian initiative - replied that "a lot depends on Trump's temperament."
"Estonia and many European countries are currently supporting what Trump is doing. He has talked to Putin so many times, and nothing is happening... I think he is already losing patience," Karis said.
Just a few days before his arrival in Brussels, a Russian missile hit the European Union delegation building in Kyiv. "It wasn't a coincidence," Karis claims. "The only mistake Putin made was to start the war in the first place".
