In the Ukrainian attack during the night on Kursk in the west of Russia, one person was killed, local authorities announced this morning.
"During the night, Kursk was the target of a massive enemy attack," the regional government announced on Telegram, adding that an elderly woman was killed and nine people were injured.
It is added that the residents of the city are being evacuated due to the fire in several buildings.
Authorities in Kursk have activated an airstrike alert due to a missile and drone attack, and urged residents to stay away from windows, Russian newspaper Izvestia reported.
Ukrainian forces have seized several hundred square kilometers in Russia's Kursk region, which borders Ukraine, since a surprise offensive in August 2024.
Russian forces have been trying to dislodge them ever since and have recaptured more than two-thirds of those territories in recent months.
The attack on Kursk followed a devastating Russian airstrike on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday, which killed at least 35 people and drew the ire of several Western leaders and the UN.

According to official information, an 85-year-old woman was killed in the attack, while the injured suffered shrapnel wounds and burns and were all hospitalized.

Firefighters and the services of the Ministry of Emergency Situations successfully localized the fires, and the residents were evacuated and taken care of in centers for temporary accommodation.
The ambulance garage was also attacked, and 11 ambulances were damaged.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that during the night air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a total of 115 Ukrainian drones in five Russian regions, TASS reported.
About 109 aircraft were shot down over the Kursk region, while three drones were destroyed in Voronezh, and one each in Moscow, Bryansk and Oryol regions.
