Snow is coming to Serbia – Date announced; Here's when it will fall in Belgrade…

November started with a late Indian summer, treating us to unusually warm weather, but today brought a change: a cold front has arrived, bringing a cool-down that will lower temperatures to the autumn average, with a real cold spell coming soon.

Serbia faces a cold spell, snow expected later in November

The real, more serious cold is yet to come. According to meteorologist Ivan Ristić, the end of November is expected to bring a drastic drop in temperatures, along with possible snowfall in lower areas, including cities.

Temperatures fall from summer to autumn levels

“Indian summer with temperatures around 25°C did not skip us this year either, but from today, November 3, a cold front is arriving in Serbia. I want to stress that this is not yet a severe cold spell; temperatures will drop by 5 to 7 degrees. From Tuesday, precipitation will stop, and the weather will stabilize again with a slight temperature increase. So, during the first ten days of November, maximum temperatures will be between 15 and 20°C, which are autumn values,” Ristić said.

Until the end of the first ten days of November, dry weather is expected across Serbia, with only occasional rain in some areas. During this period, fog is more likely, especially in valleys and river basins, and cloud cover will increase.

New turn with fog and frost around November 10

Around November 10, at the start of the second ten-day period, Ristić expects temperatures to drop to 10–15°C.

Morning temperatures will range from 3 to 8°C. On colder days, mornings may see temperatures between 0 and 5°C.

“During clear nights and foggy conditions, frost can be expected. Some models indicate that during foggy days, temperatures may not exceed 10°C,” the meteorologist said.

Polar Vortex and stronger cold; Snow November 18–19

In the last ten days of November, according to Ristić’s models, stronger cold and snowfall in lower areas are expected. In Belgrade, snow could arrive around November 24. Temperatures will range between 3 and 8°C. This forecast is supported by the appearance of the polar vortex—a large-scale winter circulation of cold air over polar regions that influences weather worldwide.

When the polar vortex is strong, it traps cold air, making winters in Serbia milder. If the vortex weakens, Arctic cold air can penetrate lower latitudes, causing drastic changes such as very low temperatures, precipitation, snow, and ice—resulting in a harsher, more severe winter.

“Currently, models also suggest the possibility of earlier snowfall, possibly in lower areas as early as November 18–19. We are monitoring developments and will announce snow in advance. The polar vortex’s behavior aligns with these projections, as it is expected to weaken in the last ten days of November, allowing cold air to push in from the north and northeast,” Ivan Ristić said.

November Weather Rollercoaster

Ristić added that the MJO (Madden-Julian Oscillation) index also indicates a major change, as circulation patterns in the coming month will shift the weather from summer to autumn, and then from autumn to winter.

“During November, we will experience all the seasons: from the summer temperatures at the start of the month, moving through autumn, and eventually into the winter phase—a true weather rollercoaster,” Ristić said.

Morning frosts and cool days and nights

Amateur meteorologist Marko Čubrilo announced that after today’s rain and cool-down, the coming days will be dry but cooler, especially at night, with possible morning frost.

“From Tuesday until the end of the week, an anticyclone will influence the weather in our area, while small amounts of cold air will flow from the east. Dry and mostly sunny weather will prevail. Nights will be clear and colder, with occasional fog and light frost, with minimum temperatures from -3 to 5°C, while daytime highs will mostly range from 11 to 16°C,” Čubrilo said.

Mild and noticeable weather deterioration towards the end of November

Frosts are expected mostly outside major urban areas. By the end of the week, around November 10, minor weather deterioration with cloudiness and light precipitation in some areas is possible. Morning frost may not occur, and daytime maximum temperatures will be between 7 and 13°C.

“Zonal, westerly winds could briefly be stronger than average around November 10. Towards mid-month, especially in the second half, these winds are expected to weaken significantly. Around November 20, noticeable weather deterioration and a cold spell could occur,” Čubrilo predicted.
