General panic in the neighborhood; Schools under attack - an email threatening a bloody massacre received
Almost 400 schools and hospitals in Bucharest and throughout the country received messages threatening bloody crimes, from yesterday evening to this morning. The author claims that he is armed and planning a massacre.
As reported by the Telegraph, the police and secret services, however, say that the threats are false and there is no cause for concern.
Even so, schools and hospitals have been ordered to beef up security.
"You all deserve to suffer, I suffer pain every day, I hate my life, so it's time you feel the same," reads the email that was sent.
The threat reached 388 hospitals and schools in several districts, which alerted the police, and the Romanian intelligence service became involved in the investigation.
Panic spreads among parents
Police and gendarmes were ordered to monitor educational institutions more closely.
The first patrols arrived at the schools before the students started classes.
Law enforcement has been stepped up both inside educational institutions and on the streets around them, with police even bringing in sniffer dogs.
"The message is serious. Let's trust the authorities who are doing their job, let's stay awake, but we are conducting the educational process in a state as close to normal as possible," said Daniel David, Minister of Education.
"According to preliminary data, there are no indications to confirm that the threat is real," said Krina Eshan from the Bucharest police.
However, panic spread among the parents.
After the threats, security was also increased at the entrance to medical institutions.
"I recommended that they check more carefully the people entering the hospital and that they monitor the flows in the health institutions more carefully," said Alexandru Rogobete, the Minister of Health.
Authorities do not yet know the identity of the person who sent the messages. The emails appear to have been sent outside of Romania.
But the author could have used a VPN server, which makes the messages appear to have come from a different geographic region, even though they were sent from Romania.
"Sometimes an attack is announced because a person feels pleasure and relief when they see panic. They feel important. They feel that they matter," said Gabriela Groza, doctor of forensic psychology.
This is not the first time such messages have been sent to schools.
In February, an email with phrases almost identical to the current threats announced an imminent attack on 9 educational institutions in Qiu.
More than 50 schools in Germany and Austria received similar threats in the spring. And last year, 2,500 schools in the Czech Republic received false bomb threats.
